This piece for multiple flutes was written in 1997. I have been playing the flute since I was nine years old. I never really chose it as "my" instrument. There was very limited choice growing up in the countryside. So, I was ok at playing it, but I never made a proper connection with it...until one afternoon in my 2x3m study in Isobel's attic in Huddersfield when I discovered whistle tones. I didn't know what they were called, but they sounded amazing. It's basically trying to play the flute withe the wrong embouchure. They are delicate and quiet and extremely hard to control. My friend Marcus said that it sounded like as if you could hear a folk band playing from behind the hill.
I have has a similar relationship with poetry. In school we had to read some "important" (in German schools every piece of German literature was always "important") poetry that never did anything for me. Then I discovered Anne Sexton's "Riding the elevator into the sky", which made me cry. It still does.
